7:30 PM - The Cigarette Surfboard at Center for the Arts - Cal Solar Main Stage
Impassioned surfer Taylor Lane builds a functional surfboard with 10,000 cigarette butts collected from California beaches. The Cigarette Surfboard becomes a platform to learn from professional surfers who are working to protect the ocean, and the symbol of a grassroots campaign to hold Big Tobacco accountable for their toxic, plastic waste. Surfing is the medium, but the message is universal.
7:30 PM - Standing Above the Clouds at Oddfellows Nevada City
When the massive Thirty Meter Telescope is proposed to be built on Mauna Kea, an uprising of kiaʻi (protectors) in Hawaiʻi and around the world dedicate their lives to protecting the sacred mountain from destruction. Through the lens of mothers and daughters in three Native Hawaiian families, Standing Above the Clouds explores intergenerational healing and the impacts of safeguarding cultural traditions.
The session will begin with the short film Cham, which beautifully depicts Indian monks on their winter pilgrimage to the Thiksey Monastery to participate in a ceremonial dance that honors their sacred traditions.
